PROTECTION FROM ULTRAVIOLET RAYS CREATED DURING WELDING OPERATIONS

Workers or other persons adjacent to areas where arc welding is being performed must be protected from hazards of ultraviolet rays.
This is accomplished either by wearing appropriate eye protection, or through the use of noncombustible or flameproof screens, curtains or other effective barriers placed between the welding operation and the affected persons.
As per CSA Standard W117.2-94, Safety in Welding, Cutting, and Allied Processes. CSA Standard Z94.3.1-02 Protective Eye wear
These barriers:
Must be constructed and positioned so as to permit circulation of air at floor level.
Come in a variety of materials. For instance, transparent welding curtains are usually made of yellow vinyl which absorbs ultraviolet radiation.
They provide a better lighted work area than opaque materials while offering protection to anyone outside the welding area. They also shield against welding sparks.
Protect others adjacent to the welding area from the glare and injurious radiation of welding or cutting operations, and prevent nearby materials and equipment from being ignited by sparks or molten metal.
Various materials used for these curtains include cotton and fiberglass. They are available in a variety of finishes and plastic coatings for specialized requirements (such as waterproofing and flame proofing).

Opaque materials are most effective against infrared radiation hazards.
There are a variety of styles available for different installation needs. For instance, curtains with
grommets may be used to hang the protective devices from overhead tracks, suspended from beams or
they may be attached to floor stanchions for permanent welding stations. Where repair work may
occur on a temporary basis, the barrier material may be attached to mobile frames.
If no physical barrier is used to isolate the welding operation, all persons within 15 feet of the arc
must wear suitable eye protection.
All affected employees should be instructed in proper placement of barriers and under what
circumstances use is mandated.
